The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, says the Service is deploying technology to combat smuggling and improve the monitoring of goods transported between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.
Adeniyi made this known on Wednesday during a working visit to the Ogun II Area Command in Abeokuta.
According to him, the system is currently being piloted at the Seme-Krake border, and will be expanded to other border points once the pilot is successful.
“We are going to deploy technology to manage transport between the two countries,” he said. “We have already developed it and are piloting it at the Seme-Krake border. Once it succeeds, we will extend it across all borders, and it will help reduce smuggling.”
The Customs boss also said that the Service has continued to work closely with authorities in Benin Republic to improve border security and streamline the processing of goods in transit.
He added that Customs officers maintain engagement with local communities to enhance intelligence gathering and operations along border areas.
“We live among the communities and rely on their knowledge of the terrain to support our operations,” he said.
Earlier, the Area Controller of Ogun II Command, Bisi Alade, disclosed that the command generated over N15 billion in revenue in the first quarter of 2025, attributing the performance to support from the Customs leadership.
