Benue: One feared dead as gunmen open fire on passenger bus in Ohimini
The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the death of one passenger following an attack by suspected armed bandits on a commercial bus in Ohimini Local Government Area during the early hours of Wednesday.
According to a police source, the incident happened around 2:00 a.m. on February 5 at Ojali community in Ohimini LGA.
The vehicle involved, an 18-seater Hummer bus with registration number GME 911 XE (Gombe), was said to be transporting passengers from Akwa Ibom State to Gombe State when it came under gun attack.
“The vehicle was driven by one Musa Jibrin. On reaching Ojali, unknown gunmen opened fire from the bush on the moving bus. One passenger, identified as Sanusi Danmaji, 30, was shot and killed,” the source disclosed.
The source further stated that no passenger was taken away during the incident.
In response, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ohimini reportedly deployed patrol teams along with other tactical units to the area.
Photographs were taken at the scene, while a search of nearby bushes was conducted in an effort to locate and arrest the assailants.
After preliminary investigations, the driver and other passengers were permitted to continue their journey.
The police command added that the matter has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for detailed investigation.
Residents and travellers were advised to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
