After protest, Idoma Voice report, MDCN set for accreditation exercise at FUHSO
Less than 24 hours medical students of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), protested over delays in the accreditation of the institution’s Medicine and Surgery programme, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) is now set to commence an accreditation exercise at the university.
This followed growing concerns by students who accused the university management of failing to secure accreditation for the MBBS programme, leaving many stranded in 300 level for years.
The protesting students had alleged that repeated promises by the management yielded no results, with some students reportedly spending up to three years in 300 level waiting to proceed to clinical studies.
Some affected students also claimed that several colleagues abandoned the programme entirely, while others rewrote JAMB and transferred to different institutions after losing hope in the process.
However, in what appears to be a major breakthrough, the university management, through an internal memorandum issued by the Registrar, Mr. Michael O. Ogiji, announced that the MDCN had communicated its planned arrival for the accreditation exercise scheduled for Thursday, May 21, 2026.
According to the memo dated May 18, 2026, all MBBS students are expected to participate in the exercise.
The memo specifically directed 300-level MBBS students in Streams A and B for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic sessions, who were earlier asked to vacate the school premises and hostels, to return on or before Wednesday, May 20.
“All MBBS students are requested to note that their presence during the accreditation exercise is mandatory. Any student who absents him/herself from the exercise does so at his/her risk,” the memo stated.
