A notorious bandit identified as Auta Yankuzo has allegedly shared a photo on TikTok displaying a large sum of cash said to have been obtained from kidnapping ransom payments.

The allegation was made by conflict journalist Bakatsine in a post on X on Wednesday.

According to Bakatsine, the image was posted on Yankuzo’s TikTok account on Tuesday.

“Bandits TikToker Auta Yankuzo has posted a ransom payment on his account yesterday. The picture appears to be from previous payment as the ground looks too dry to be of recent days,” Bakatsine wrote.

Bakatsine, who is known for covering conflict and insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West, suggested that although the image was uploaded recently, it may have been taken during an earlier ransom transaction based on the condition of the surrounding environment.

The post has renewed concerns over the growing use of social media platforms by criminal groups to publicise their activities and allegedly flaunt proceeds from crimes.

The development comes weeks after a viral video showed armed bandits displaying bundles of cash allegedly obtained from ransom payments, sparking fresh debate over Nigeria’s worsening security situation.

Kidnapping for ransom remains one of the country’s most pressing security challenges, particularly in the North-West and parts of the North-Central, where armed groups have repeatedly targeted communities, motorists, schools and farmers.

Despite ongoing military operations and security crackdowns against criminal gangs, incidents of kidnapping and bandit attacks continue to be reported across several states.
