Premier League referee Anthony Taylor retires after 16 years
Premier League referee Anthony Taylor has announced his decision to retire from top-level officiating after 16 years.
The 47-year-old will step away from the game following the conclusion of the World Cup, ending a career that saw him handle 831 matches across English, European and international competitions.
Taylor’s final assignment came during the 2026 World Cup, where he officiated the last-16 encounter between Portugal and eventual champions Spain.
In a statement announcing his retirement, Taylor described refereeing at the highest level as a privilege but acknowledged the demands that come with the role.
“Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the scrutiny is constant.
“The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career,” he said.
