Kano Assembly calls for urgent action as diphtheria outbreak kills over 50 children
The Kano State House of Assembly has urged the state government to take immediate action to contain a diphtheria outbreak in Rano Local Government Area, where more than 50 children have reportedly died.
The issue was raised on Tuesday by the member representing Rano Constituency, Hon. Ibrahim Malami, during a motion of urgent public importance.
Malami said the outbreak had affected Rurum A, Rurum B and Sabuwar Kaura communities in Rurum Ward, with over 50 children reportedly losing their lives to the disease.
He disclosed that the local government’s medical department had already begun emergency measures to tackle the situation, while his office had also provided medical drugs to support the intervention.
The lawmaker expressed appreciation to his colleagues for backing the call for immediate government action, stressing the need to prevent further deaths and contain the spread of the disease.
In another development, the Assembly confirmed Hon. Salihi Adamu as the new Secretary of Takai Local Government Area.
The confirmation was announced by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, during Tuesday’s plenary after the House Committee on Local Government presented its report.
The committee, headed by Hon. Aliyu Muhammad, recommended Adamu’s confirmation after determining that he met the requirements and possessed the capacity to discharge the duties of the office.
