State police: Rivers Assembly backs constitutional amendment
The Rivers State House of Assembly has backed the proposed creation of state police in Nigeria.
The development followed the transmission of the 1999 Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, by the National Assembly to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval.
The proposed amendment seeks to replace Nigeria’s single national policing structure with a dual system comprising the Federal Police Service and State Police Services.
Rivers is among the state Houses of Assembly that have supported the proposed creation of state police, alongside Ogun and Nasarawa.
