Boehly completes process to buy Chelsea
On Monday, a Todd Boehly-led consortium completed the purchase of Chelsea to cross the finish line of the acquisition process.
As THEWILL previously reported, the Premier League team confirmed that the transfer would be completed at the start of this week, three months after Roman Abramovich chose to sell the club.
This month, an ownership group led by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Boehly, Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter, and Hansjorg Wyss secured an agreement to purchase the Blues for £4.25 billion. The sale of the London club was also approved by the Portuguese government last week, which was essential because Abramovich is a Portuguese citizen.
The UK government was satisfied that the deal would not benefit Abramovich. The Russian businessman, who has owned Chelsea for 19 years, was sanctioned due to his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
When he put the Blues up for sale, the 55-year-old announced that the entire purchase price would go to a philanthropic foundation, with the proceeds going to victims of the Ukrainian war.
