EPL: Southampton beat Chelsea 2-1

Adam Armstrong’s goal handed Thomas Tuchel’s team their second Premier League loss of the year, as Southampton stunned Chelsea 2-1 after rallying for a comeback.

Raheem Sterling had broken the deadlock and given Chelsea the lead after 23 minutes, but Romeo Lavia’s potent long-range goal pulled them level five minutes later. Armstrong gave the home team the lead on the final play of the half.

Chelsea put in a fragmented display without Reece James, who is out due to illness, and Kai Havertz wasted their best opportunity to tie the score in the second half. On the hour mark, Joe Aribo was introduced to replace goal-scorer Lavia because of a hamstring injury.

After a subjective vibrant performance, the win saw Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team tie Chelsea in the early Premier League standings, continuing the Blues’ underwhelming start to the season.

As a result of their three points, Southampton moves into seventh place and he back they have a trip to Wolves coming up next. Tuchel will be hopeful that Chelsea can turn things around against West Ham on Saturday after they struggled to establish their flow against the Saints.
