Ondo sends bill to assembly for 33 new LCDAs
The Ondo State Government has unveiled plans to establish 33 new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) within the state. The proposal received approval from the state executive council, as revealed by Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, during a press briefing.
The initiative aims to decentralize governance and enhance grassroots administration. Currently, the state has 18 statutory local council areas, and if the legislature approves the proposal, the total number of councils in the state will increase to 51.
According to Charles Titiloye, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, the new LCDAs will have the same responsibilities as the existing 18 councils. The government has taken the necessary steps to enact the enabling law for the establishment of these new LCDAs, which has been forwarded to the state House of Assembly for proper review and debate.
The bill, proposed in 2019 and based on recommendations from an 11-member committee, seeks to strengthen local governance and bring services closer to the people at the grassroots level.
