Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has shed light on the reasons behind the signing of Andre Onana from Inter Milan during this summer’s transfer window. The Dutch manager explained that Onana possesses the qualities necessary to elevate Manchester United to the next level.

Onana’s arrival was officially confirmed as he completed a £47 million transfer to Manchester United from Inter, signing a five-year contract with the option of extending it for an additional year. The 27-year-old goalkeeper has been brought in to fill the void left by David de Gea, who departed after an impressive 12-year tenure with the Red Devils when his contract expired in July.

Speaking about the acquisition, Ten Hag emphasized the significance of clean sheets for a goalkeeper and praised Onana for his ability to contribute to the team’s playing out from the back, showcasing his excellent qualities in distribution.

“Most importantly, always for a keeper, is clean sheets, and he is not doing that on his own,” Ten Hag remarked, according to Metro UK. “But nowadays, football also demands good playing out from the back, outstanding playing qualities, and that is the quality Andre [Onana] has. So you need both, and you need to cover both areas, so we are happy, of course.”

Apart from Onana’s technical skills, Ten Hag also highlighted his physical presence and strong personality as attributes that will greatly benefit the team. The manager expressed his confidence that Onana’s determination to win and his hunger for trophies will be instrumental in driving the team to higher levels of success.

“He is so keen on winning, he is so eager to win trophies, he will help the team and help the squad to get to higher levels,” Ten Hag added.
