Fernandes breaks silence on replacing Maguire as captain
Manchester United’s star midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, has spoken out about his delight at being appointed as the team’s new captain. The decision came after manager Erik ten Hag decided to strip Harry Maguire of the armband and hand it to Fernandes.
In an interview with United’s website, Fernandes expressed his feelings about the significant role bestowed upon him, saying, “It’s not something that you dream about because that’s above your dream. It’s something that makes you feel proud of everything that we’ve been doing.”
Being named captain is a huge responsibility, but for Fernandes, who is already an integral part of the club, it is a natural progression. He stated that he will maintain the same standards and continue giving his best on the field, just as he did before taking on the captaincy.
Throughout the last season, the 28-year-old Portuguese midfielder often led the team onto the pitch as Maguire faced challenges securing his place in the starting lineup. Now, with the permanent captain’s armband, Fernandes is ready to take on the role with determination and dedication.
Erik ten Hag, explaining his decision to appoint Fernandes as captain, praised the midfielder for being an “inspiration” and an “example” to his teammates. The Portuguese playmaker’s leadership qualities and on-field performances have made him a standout figure at Old Trafford, making him the right choice to lead the team.
