Scores feared dead as petrol-laden tanker explodes in Lagos

A tragic incident unfolded in the Sari Iganmu area of Lagos State as a petrol-laden tanker exploded, leading to the feared loss of numerous lives. The catastrophic event took place on Thursday evening, and emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene to battle the raging fire.

While the precise cause of the explosion remains unknown, videos circulating online depict the intensity of the fire, accompanied by anguished cries from onlookers. Responding promptly, officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services engaged in efforts to quell the formidable blaze.

Shakiru Amodu, the spokesperson for the agency, provided a succinct update, stating, “Tanker fire is being combatted at the Lagos Quadrapoint Bridge, by National Arts Theater, Iganmu, as Sari Iganmu and Ilupeju Fire Crews combine efforts to tame the raging fire.”

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority also communicated the incident, cautioning motorists about the hazardous situation and urging them to steer clear of the affected area for their safety. The spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, pledged to furnish further details as soon as possible when questioned about the specifics of the event.

An eyewitness, speaking under anonymity, recounted the harrowing incident, revealing that the ill-fated container was en route from Apapa. The container struggled to ascend the Orile-bound bridge, ultimately losing balance and toppling off the bridge’s rear section. Tragically, a collision occurred with a fuel tanker, resulting in a devastating explosion.

Approximately ten vehicles, along with their occupants, were ensnared in the aftermath of the collision. The eyewitness emphasized the prompt response of fire service personnel from Iganmu station, who swiftly arrived at the scene to combat the inferno.
