Bandits attack school, abduct NECO candidates, kill teacher in Borno
Gunmen suspected to be bandits have abducted an unspecified number of students from Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area, during the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examination conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO).
The attackers reportedly stormed the community on Monday morning while the students were writing their examination.
During the attack, one teacher was shot dead, while another sustained gunshot injuries.
Residents told journalists that troops stationed in the area had reportedly left on a patrol to nearby Uba, about 16 kilometres away, shortly before the attackers invaded the community.
According to one resident, the gunmen arrived in large numbers, firing sporadically and causing panic before abducting several students and their teachers.
“The soldiers were not around when the terrorists invaded. They came in large numbers, firing sporadically and causing panic everywhere.
“They took away students writing NECO and their teachers,” the resident said.
The spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident, stating that several students remain missing following the attack.
Security agencies have yet to disclose the exact number of abducted students as efforts continue to locate and rescue the victims.
