As long as one Nigerian lives in IDP Camp, we are all displaced — Obi

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over the poor living conditions of more than 1,000 internally displaced persons at the Ramin Kura IDP Camp in Sokoto State.

Obi visited the camp on Tuesday, September 29, during a two-day visit to the state. He said many of the displaced residents were living in makeshift shelters and thatched rooms, with some rooms accommodating up to 10 people.

He also identified inadequate toilet facilities, the absence of a primary healthcare centre and the lack of a basic school for children as major challenges facing the camp.

Obi said the situation was distressing and called on the government to improve living conditions for the displaced residents while tackling the insecurity that forced them from their communities.

“I have always insisted that as long as even one Nigerian lives in an IDP camp, we are all internally displaced,” Obi said.

The NDC candidate said the Sokoto visit marked his 12th visit to an IDP camp in Nigeria. He pledged to continue supporting people displaced by insecurity and other crises.

Obi also urged political leaders to spend their holidays in Nigeria so they could better understand the difficulties facing vulnerable citizens.

He said the government should prioritise issues such as insecurity, poverty, youth unemployment, out-of-school children and drug abuse.

According to him, these challenges featured prominently in his engagements across Sokoto State.
