Daudu Gotring appointed as new Managing Director of OPay Nigeria

Daudu Gotring, a former director at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been appointed as the Managing Director of Opay Nigeria, following the resignation of Olu Akanmu, who served as President and co-CEO of the fintech startup for two years.

During his tenure as co-CEO, Olu Akanmu played a significant role in the growth and development of Opay in Nigeria. Under his leadership, Opay became one of the largest fintech companies in Africa, boasting a user base of over 30 million, with about 500,000 agents and more than 300,000 merchants.

Announcing his departure on his social media pages, Akanmu expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their collective efforts in deepening financial inclusion in Nigeria. He also acknowledged the strides made in ensuring more people have access to the opportunities offered by the digital financial system.

Two years ago, Opera, the parent company of Opay, appointed Olu Akanmu, who previously served as Executive Director for Retail Banking at FCMB, to the role of President and co-CEO. Before his appointment, Opay’s operations in Nigeria were overseen by Yahui Zhou, the Chairman and co-CEO of Opera, and Iniabasi Akpan, the former Nigeria Country Manager of Opay.

As Olu Akanmu steps down from his position, the focus now shifts to Daudu Gotring, the new Managing Director, who will be entrusted with leading and further growing Opay’s presence in the Nigerian market. With his experience from the Central Bank of Nigeria, Gotring’s expertise may bring new perspectives to the company’s strategic initiatives.

As for Olu Akanmu’s future endeavors, he leaves Opay with a strong legacy of fostering financial inclusion in Nigeria through digital solutions. His expertise and experience may lead him to other exciting opportunities within the fintech and financial sectors.
