A tragic road accident at the Odumudu Junction of Njete-Akwa Expressway in Anambra State claimed the lives of at least five individuals on Friday.

The accident involved a total of 10 people, consisting of three adult males and seven adult females. Tragically, five adult females lost their lives, while two adult males and two adult females sustained injuries. One adult male was fortunate enough to escape unharmed.

The Anambra State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, attributing it to a road section that had deteriorated.

According to Margaret Onabe, the acting Sector Public Education Officer, speaking on behalf of the Sector Commander, Adeoye Irelewuyi, the accident occurred around 7:30 am and involved a commercial Mistibushi L300 bus with the registration number XE245AWK and a business DAF/Leyland lorry with the registration number T-19094LA.

An eyewitness reported that the two vehicles were traveling to different destinations, with one headed for Awka and the other for Onitsha. Both vehicles arrived at the junction simultaneously, resulting in the lorry’s container collapsing onto the bus due to the truck’s weight.

The injured victims were promptly transported by the FRSC rescue team to Divine Care Hospital, Umunya, for medical treatment, while the deceased were taken to Chira Hospital for confirmation by doctors before being laid to rest at New Jerusalem Mortuary in Nteje.

The state Sector Commander, Adeoye Irelewuyi, extended condolences to the families of the deceased victims and offered prayers for the repose of their souls. He also wished the injured victims a swift recovery.

Irelewuyi urged drivers to exercise caution and maintain awareness of their surroundings while on the road.
