APC suspends chairman over allegations of rape, impregnation of teen house help
The chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Roni Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Saleh Idris, has been suspended by the state chapter of the party. This action comes in the wake of serious allegations that he sexually assaulted and impregnated his 14-year-old housemaid. The suspension was officially announced through a statement signed by the state chairman, Aminu Sani Gumel.
Saleh Idris had been remanded in a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Dutse, the state capital, following the allegations made against him. His arrest was a result of a complaint lodged by the victim’s brother to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on October 4.
The NSCDC’s spokesperson in the state, Adamu Shehu, also confirmed in an official statement that a laboratory test had verified the minor’s pregnancy, which was found to be at a healthy four months and two weeks stage.
The APC’s statement detailed the party’s resolutions regarding this matter, stating, “In light of the allegations of rape and impregnation of a minor, and the preliminary investigation conducted by the state chapter, the party has reached the following conclusions:
- Your actions are in violation of Section 21.2 (viii) and (x) of the APC 2022 Constitution, as amended.
- There is a necessity for further investigation.”
Consequently, the party has decided to suspend Saleh Idris from his position as the chairman of the APC in Roni Local Government Area pending the final report of the investigation. In addition, he has been instructed to hand over the responsibilities of the position to the vice chairman of the local government area.
