The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Maiduguri Zonal Command, on Wednesday arraigned Bukar Umar Alhaji before Justice Muhammad Maina of the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri. The defendant faces a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretense and criminal misappropriation amounting to ₦2,100,000.

According to the charges, Alhaji, alongside an accomplice now at large, allegedly defrauded Ibrahim Ismail in March 2022 by falsely claiming to sell him two plots of land in Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State. The EFCC noted that the defendant misrepresented ownership of the land and failed to refund the money.

Alhaji pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecution counsel, Faruk Muhammad, requested a trial date and asked the court to remand the defendant in custody.

Justice Maina adjourned the trial to December 4, 2023, and ordered that the defendant be remanded in the Maiduguri Maximum Correctional Facility.

The charges against the defendant are based on violations of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2005.
