Mexico has approved the appointment of former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country.

Omokri announced the development on Wednesday in a post on his X account, saying the Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, Jose Manuel Briseño Flores, delivered the diplomatic approval to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He said Flores presented the document, known as an agrément, to the ministry’s Director of Protocol, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.

The approval clears the way for Omokri to serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Nigeria to Mexico, with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Omokri expressed gratitude to God while announcing the development, explaining that the Mexican government had formally accepted his appointment as Nigeria’s representative.

President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri in November 2025 alongside 68 other ambassadorial nominees, including former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

The Senate confirmed the nominees in December 2025. Tinubu subsequently approved the postings of 65 ambassadors-designate on March 6, 2026, assigning Omokri to Mexico City.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier disclosed that Mexico and Japan were yet to grant approval for Nigeria’s ambassadorial nominees to their countries.

The ministry expressed optimism at the time that both countries would communicate their consent in due course.

With Mexico’s approval now secured, Omokri has received the host country’s formal consent for his diplomatic posting.
