Police kill three suspected robbers, recover AK-47 in Benue
Operatives of the Benue State Police Command have thwarted an armed robbery operation and gunned down three suspected robbers during a fierce exchange of gunfire along the Vaase–Chito Road in Ukum Local Government Area.
Security sources revealed that the incident occurred at about 2:48 a.m. on June 8 after the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Gbeji Division received intelligence that armed men believed to be bandits were attacking motorists and robbing them of their belongings on the route.
In response to the report, the DPO mobilised a patrol team, alongside members of the Community Volunteer Guards, and moved to the area.
According to the sources, the suspects opened fire immediately they sighted the security operatives, triggering a gun duel between both sides.
The security team returned fire and successfully neutralised three of the suspects. Some of the slain suspects were reportedly dressed in military camouflage attire.
Other members of the gang reportedly fled the scene on motorcycles with suspected gunshot injuries.
During a search of the area, operatives recovered one AK-47 rifle, 21 rounds of live ammunition, and a motorcycle.
The recovered items have been secured by the police as exhibits for further investigation.
The remains of the deceased suspects were evacuated to the Gbeji Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.
Police authorities stated that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing gang members.
The operation forms part of ongoing security efforts aimed at tackling armed robbery, banditry, and other violent crimes across Benue State.
