A 14-year-old boy has drowned in Dapchi, Bursari Local Government Area of Yobe State, after a river swept him and another child away.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2026. It happened at Unguwar Bulama Alhaji Ahmadu in Dapchi.

Rescue teams recovered the boy, Goni Mustapha, from the river around 5 p.m.

Rescuers continued searching for the second child at the time of filing this report.

The incident has renewed concerns about the dangers of swollen rivers during the rainy season. Rising water levels and strong currents can quickly endanger lives.

Residents, especially parents and guardians, should keep children away from rivers and streams. Children should not play or swim near water bodies without adult supervision.

Members of the public should also avoid crossing fast-flowing or swollen rivers. Anyone who sees someone fall into a river should alert rescue teams or community leaders immediately.

Authorities and community leaders will continue the search for the missing child. They will also work to prevent similar incidents in the community.
