AFCON: CAF shuns Osimhen, Super Eagles players in group stage best XI
No player from the Super Eagles secures a spot in the official team of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stages, as unveiled by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Wednesday night.
The CAF Group Stage XI predominantly features talents from Senegal and Morocco, with players from Equatorial Guinea also making a significant impact.
Despite the Super Eagles finishing second in Group A with seven points, their performances were not convincing enough to earn representation in the official XI.
Equatorial Guinea’s Jesus Owono takes the goalkeeper position, while Emilio Nsue, the current leading scorer in AFCON 2023 with five goals, claims a spot upfront.
Morocco, semifinalists in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, are well-represented with four players: Sofyan Amrabat and Azzedine Ounahi in midfield, and Achraf Hakimi and Nayef Aguerd in defense.
Defending champions Senegal contribute three players, including center back Kalidou Koulibaly, forward Ismaila Sarr, and midfielder Lamine Camara.
Completing the roster are Angolan attacker Gelson Dala and left back Arthur Masuaku from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
