Lagos govt shuts Mile 12, Owode Onirin markets over environmental issues
The Lagos State Government on Friday took action by closing down the Mile 12 International Market and the Owode Onirin Market due to severe environmental violations.
The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources clarified that the closure was a result of rampant disposal and incineration of waste, the unsanitary condition of the environment, and obstructions in the drainage systems.
In an official statement, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, instructed the Lagos Waste Management Agency and KAI to seal off the markets.
“The decision to close the markets stemmed from the ongoing indiscriminate dumping and burning of waste, deplorable environmental conditions, and congested and blocked drains.
This action was also prompted by the unauthorized and reckless parking and abandonment of trucks along the highway leading to these markets, hindering smooth traffic flow,” stated the ministry. (NAN)
