President Bola Tinubu has approved N45 billion for the installation of an integrated biosecurity and disease surveillance system at five international airports in Nigeria.

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, announced the approval on Wednesday while briefing journalists after the Federal Executive Council FEC meeting chaired by the President.

Pate identified the selected airports as those in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt and Enugu.

He explained that the project would be implemented through a 20-year public-private partnership with the BioHealth Consortium.

According to the minister, the initiative would deploy advanced technologies, including aircraft wastewater monitoring, air and surface sampling, as well as specialised systems for detecting dangerous pathogens.

Pate said the surveillance network would enable authorities to track a wide range of infectious disease threats, enhance cooperation among relevant agencies and improve Nigeria’s capacity to detect and respond to emerging health risks at its borders.
